INTRODUCTION: Establishing reference ranges for central airway parameters and exploring their influencing factors in Han Chinese non-smoking adults. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on Han Chinese non-smoking adults who underwent chest CT scans at the Tongzhou Campus of Dongzhimen Hospital Affiliated with the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine between September 2022 and November 2022. The SYNAPSE 3D image analysis software was utilized, enabling the extraction of critical parameters such as central airway length, airway wall thickness (AWT), airway lumen area (ALA), and subcarinal angle (SCA). Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and multiple linear regression analysis methods were employed to evaluate the relationship between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. RESULTS: The study encompassed 888 Han Chinese non-smoking adults, comprising 456 females and 432 males. Significant sex differences were noted in central airway length, AWT, and ALA, with measurements in males exceeding those in females (p < 0.01) with no significant difference in SCA. Correlation analyses unveiled relationships between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. During multiple linear regression analyses, no conclusive evidence emerged to demonstrate the independent or combined explanatory or predictive capacity of the aforementioned variables for central airway length and SCA. Although sex has a significant impact on AWT and ALA, its capability in explanation or prediction remains limited. The conclusions drawn from the primary analysis receive reinforcement from the outcomes of sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION: Establishing the distribution range of central airway parameters in non-smoking Han Chinese adults. It observed significant sex differences in these parameters, except for the SCA. However, the study found that the predictive or explanatory power of age, sex, weight, and height for central airway parameters was either limited or non-significant.

BACKGROUND: The protective effect of tracheal stents is reported to relieve airway obstruction and reduce side effects of rapid progression of malignant tracheoesophageal fistula (MTEF) after immunotherapy in this case with 10 mo follow-up. CASE SUMMARY: Two kinds of silicone stents were placed in the main airway of a 58-year-old male to relieve the airway obstruction caused by advanced esophageal carcinoma. The patient then received four doses of toripalimab. Subsequently, rapid, progressive deterioration of the original fistula was found. Although the fistula enlarged rapidly after immunotherapy, it remained covered completely, and likely because of this, his condition remained stable. Therefore, immunotherapy could be continued to treat the primary tumor. Despite these efforts, the patient died of the advancement of his esophageal cancer. CONCLUSION: Appropriately-sized tracheal stent placement combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors may improve the quality of life and survival of patients with MTEF.

This study aims to evaluate the methodological and reporting quality of diagnosis and treatment guidelines for hyperuricemia as well as the expert consensuses and promote the understanding and application of the diagnosis and treatment guidelines for hyperuricemia. With "hyperuricemia" "guidelines" "consensus" "recommendations" as the key words in titles, the authors searched for the published clinical guidelines on hyperuricemia in Chinese against CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, Medlive and the official website of the industry association. The retrieval time limit was until May 31, 2021. The appraisal of guidelines for research and evaluation Ⅱ(AGREEⅡ) and the reporting items for practice guidelines in health care(RIGHT) were employed to evaluate the methodological quality and reporting quality of 14 guidelines/consensuses included. The average scores of the guidelines/consensuses were 80.85%(48.61%-98.61%) for the domain of scope and purpose, 34.52%(0-69.44%) for the domain of stakeholder involvement, 35.53%(6.25%-92.19%) for the domain of rigor of development, 55.85%(23.61%-86.11%) for the domain of clarity of presentation, 26.19%(0-76.04%) for the domain of applicability, and 21.42%(0-50.00%) for the domain of editorial independence. Nine guidelines/consensuses were of medium overall quality with grade B recommendation, and five guidelines/consensuses were of poor quality with grade C recommendation. The RIGHT classified the fourteen guidelines/consensuses into one of high reporting quality, three of medium reporting quality, and ten of low reporting quality. The results of this study indicate that the standardization and rigor of the methodological quality and the reporting quality of the clinical guidelines/consensuses for hyperuricemia in China remain to be strengthened.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneous macrophages play an important role in multiple liver diseases, including viral fulminant hepatitis (VFH). Fibrinogen-like protein 2 (FGL2) is expressed on macrophages and regulates VFH pathogenesis; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. AIM: To explore how FGL2 regulates macrophage function and subsequent liver injury during VFH. METHODS: Murine hepatitis virus strain 3 (MHV-3) was used to induce VFH in FGL2-deficient (Fgl2-/-) and wild-type (WT) mice. The dynamic constitution of hepatic macrophages was examined. Adoptive transfer of Fgl2-/- or WT bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) into WT recipients with macrophages depleted prior to infection was carried out and the consequent degree of liver damage was compared. The signaling cascades that may be regulated by FGL2 were detected in macrophages. RESULTS: Following MHV-3 infection, hepatic macrophages were largely replenished by proinflammatory monocyte-derived macrophages (MoMFs), which expressed high levels of FGL2. In Fgl2-/- mice, the number of infiltrating inflammatory MoMFs was reduced compared with that in WT mice after viral infection. Macrophage depletion ameliorated liver damage in WT mice and further alleviated liver damage in Fgl2-/- mice. Adoptive transfer of Fgl2-/- BMDMs into macrophage-removed recipients significantly reduced the degree of liver damage. Inhibition of monocyte infiltration also significantly ameliorated liver damage. Functionally, Fgl2 deletion impaired macrophage phagocytosis and the antigen presentation potential and attenuated the proinflammatory phenotype. At the molecular level, FGL2 deficiency impaired IRF3, IRF7, and p38 phosphorylation, along with NF-κB activation in BMDMs in response to viral infection. CONCLUSION: Infiltrated MoMFs represent a major source of hepatic inflammation during VFH progression, and FGL2 expression on MoMFs maintains the proinflammatory phenotype via p38-dependent positive feedback, contributing to VFH pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to characterize the bacterial microbiota in the oral cavity (OC), throat, trachea, and distal alveoli of patients with primary malignant tracheal tumors (PMTT), including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and salivary gland carcinoma patients (SGC), for comparison with a matched non-malignant tracheal tumor (NMTT) group. METHODS: Patients with pathological diagnosis of PMTT and NMTT were included in this study. Saliva, throat swab (TS), trachea protected specimen brush (PSB), and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples were collected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The composition, diversity, and distribution of the microbiota were compared among biogeographic sampling sites and patient groups. The relationship between the genera-level taxon abundance and tracheal tumor types was also investigated to screen for candidate biomarkers. FINDINGS: The most represented phyla in the four sites were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Fusobacteria. In SCC patients, the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes gradually decreased with increasing depth into the respiratory tract, while the relative abundance of Proteobacteria gradually increased. Bacterial communities at the four biogeographic sites formed two distinct clusters, with OC and TS samples comprising one cluster and PSB and BALF samples comprising the other group. Principal coordinate analysis showed that trachea microbiota in SCC patients were distinct from that of SGC or NMTT patients. In the trachea, AUCs generated by Prevotella and Alloprevotella showed that the abundance of these genera could distinguish SCC patients from both NMTT and SGC patients. INTERPRETATION: The structure of respiratory tract microbiota in PMTT patients is related to tumor type. Certain bacteria could potentially serve as markers of SCC, although verification with large-sample studies is necessary.

Long non-coding RNA ZFAS1 is down-regulated in sepsis. However, whether ZFAS1 participates in sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) remains largely unknown. LPS injection to rats was used to establish an in vivo sepsis model, while LPS stimulation with H9C2 cell was used to mimic an in vitro sepsis-induced myocardial injury model. Western blots and quantitative RT-PCR were performed to evaluate protein and mRNA levels, respectively. ELISA was conducted to determine cytokine levels in supernatant. Flow cytometry was used to test apoptosis. Dual-luciferase assay was performed to validate binding between ZFAS1 and miR-34b-5p, miR-34b-5p and SIRT1. Our data revealed that ZFAS1 and SIRT1 were down-regulated, while miR-34b-5p was up-regulated in LPS-induced H9C2 cells. Inhibition of miR-34b-5p or overexpression of ZFAS1 alleviated inflammatory response and cell apoptosis in LPS-stimulated H9C2 cells. A mechanism study revealed that ZFAS1 sponged miR-34b-5p and thus elevated expression of SIRT1, which was prohibited by miR-34b-5p. ZFAS1 alleviated inflammatory response and cell apoptosis in LPS-stimulated H9C2 cells via the miR-34b-5p/SIRT1 axis, providing novel potential therapeutic targets for SIC.

BACKGROUND: Protamine is a polycationic, and a strong basic peptide isolated from Clupeidae or Salmonidae fishes' sperm, which is rich in arginine and highly alkaline. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of lidocaine pre-treatment on protamine-induced pulmonary vascular reaction during the repair of congenital heart disease. METHODS: Eighty patients undergoing repair of congenital heart disease were randomly divided into four groups: A1 (non-pulmonary hypertension + lidocaine pre-treatment) group, A2 (non-pulmonary hypertension + normal saline) group, B1 (pulmonary hypertension + lidocaine pre-treatment) group, and B2 (pulmonary hypertension + normal saline) group. Hemodynamic parameters, pulmonary inflammation, and pulmonary function were assessed at six intraoperative time points, two intraoperative time points and three intraoperative time points, respectively. P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: A2 group exhibited increased PAP, Paw, RI and A-aDO2. B2 group exhibited increased Paw, RI and A-aDO2 and decreased Cydn and OI after protamine administration. These changes were not observed in A1 and B1 group. Compared with A1 and B1 groups, plasma TXB2 level in A2 and B2 group was higher, but 6-keto-PGF1a in A2 and B2 groups was lower. Incidence of protamine adverse reactions in A1 and B1 group was lower than that in A2 and B2 group. CONCLUSION: Precondition of lidocaine before neutralization of heparin may be effective for protamine-induced pulmonary vascular reaction during CHD repair.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of nuciferine on alleviating obesity based on modulating gut microbiota, ameliorating chronic inflammation, and improving gut permeability. In this study, the obese model mice were induced by high-fat diet and then randomly divided into model group, and nuciferine group; some other mice of the same week age were fed with normal diet as normal group. In the modeling process, the mice were administered intragastrically(ig) for 12 weeks. In the course of both modeling and treatment, the body weight and food intake of mice in each group were measured weekly. After modeling and treatment, the Lee's index, weight percentage of inguinal subcutaneous fat, and the level of blood lipid in each group were measured. The pathological changes of adipocytes were observed by HE staining to evaluate the efficacy of nuciferine treatment in obese model mice. 16 S rRNA sequencing analysis was conducted to study the changes in diversity and abundance of gut microbiota after nuciferine treatment. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and quantitative Real-time polymerase chain reaction(qPCR) were used to detect the levels of inflammatory factors interleukin-6(IL-6), interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and the expression of related genes in adipose tissue of mice in each group, so as to evaluate the effect of nuciferine on chronic inflammation of mice in obese model group. qPCR was used to detect the expression of occludin and tight junction protein 1(ZO-1)gene in colon tissure, so as to evaluate the effect of nuciferine on intestinal permeability of mice in obese group. Nuciferine decreased the body weight of obese mice, Lee's index, weight percentage of inguinal subcutaneous fat(P<0.05), and reduced the volume of adipocytes, decreased the level of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)(P<0.05) in serum, improved dysbacteriosis, increased the relative abundance of Alloprevotella, Turicibacter, and Lactobacillus, lowered the relative abundance of Helicobac-ter, decreased the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α genes in adipose tissue(P<0.01), decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α in serum(P<0.05), and increased the expression of occludin and ZO-1 genes related to tight junction in colon tissue(P<0.01). Nuciferine could treat obesity through modulating gut microbiota, decreasing gut permeability and ameliorating inflammation.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether Sp1 can ameliorate sepsis-induced myocardial injury and explore the potential molecular mechanism. METHODS: The embryonic cardiomyocyte cell line H9C2 and primary cultured mouse neonatal cardiomyocytes (CMNCs) were treated with LPS or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). A mouse model of LPS-induced sepsis was established using male C57BL/6J mice and their cardiomyocytes were collected. Real-time reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) assay was used to detect the expression levels of Sp1 and ZFAS1 in cardiomyocytes. Western blotting analysis was used to assess the protein expression levels of Sp1, apoptosis-associated proteins and Notch signaling pathway related proteins. Luciferase assay was used to detect the interaction between Sp1 and ZFAS1. Cell transfection was used to generate H9C2 cells with overexpressed or knocked down of Sp1 or ZFAS1. MTT assay and flow cytometry analysis were used to test the cell proliferation and cell apoptosis ratio. RESULTS: Our data revealed that the expressions of ZFAS1 and Sp1 were significantly reduced in LPS-treated H9C2 cells and primary CMNCs. The downregulation of ZFAS1 and Sp1 were also found in cardiomyocytes obtained from LPS-challenged mice. LPS induced H9C2 cell apoptosis and depressed cell proliferation was ameliorated by ZFAS1 overexpression and aggravated by ZFAS1 knockdown. Mechanistically, Luciferase assay indicated that Sp1 could bind to ZFAS1, and positively regulated ZFAS1 expression. Moreover, Notch signaling pathway participates in H9C2 cell apoptosis mediated by Sp1. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates that Sp1 regulates LPS-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis via ZFAS1/Notch signaling pathway, which may serve as therapeutic targets for sepsis-induced myocardial injury.

Objective: The aim of this study is to discover the possible working mechanisms of Ardisiae Japonicae Herba (AJH) on hepatoma carcinoma (HCC). Methods: In this study, ethanol extract of AJH was prepared and used to treat HCC cell in vitro. Furthermore, a genomic wide RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed to screen deregulated genes in HCC cells after the treatment of AJH extract. The gene and protein expression related to lipid metabolism in HCC cells were also investigated to validate the results obtained from RNA-seq. Results: AJH extract could inhibit HCC cell proliferation in vitro. RNA-seq analysis has identified 1,601 differentially expressed genes (DEGs, fold change ≥ 2.0 or fold change ≤ 0.5, P < 0.05) in HCC after AJH extract treatment, which included 225 up-regulated genes and 1,376 down-regulated genes. KEGG pathway analysis of DEGs demonstrated that lipid metabolism was a potential pathway related to AJH treatment. In agreement with the RNA-seq data, qPCR and Western-blot analysis indicated that expression of genes and proteins related to lipid metabolism (SREBP1, ACC, ACLY and FASN) were significantly down-regulated in AJH treatment group as compared with the control group. Furthermore, AJH extract could also decrease lipid contents and cellular free fatty acid levels in HCC cells. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of AJH could inhibit HCC cell proliferation in vitro, the possible mechanism may be related to the inhibition of lipid metabolism.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a serious and even lethal respiratory illness. The mortality of critically ill patients with COVID-19, especially short term mortality, is considerable. It is crucial and urgent to develop risk models that can predict the mortality risks of patients with COVID-19 at an early stage, which is helpful to guide clinicians in making appropriate decisions and optimizing the allocation of hospital resoureces. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we enrolled 949 adult patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 admitted to Tongji Hospital in Wuhan between January 28 and February 12, 2020. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were collected and analyzed. A multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was performed to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence interval for assessing the risk factors for 30-day mortality. Results: The 30-day mortality was 11.8% (112 of 949 patients). Forty-nine point nine percent (474) patients had one or more comorbidities, with hypertension being the most common (359 [37.8%] patients), followed by diabetes (169 [17.8%] patients) and coronary heart disease (89 [9.4%] patients). Age above 50 years, respiratory rate above 30 beats per minute, white blood cell count of more than10 × 109/L, neutrophil count of more than 7 × 109/L, lymphocyte count of less than 0.8 × 109/L, platelet count of less than 100 × 109/L, lactate dehydrogenase of more than 400 U/L and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein of more than 50 mg/L were independent risk factors associated with 30-day mortality in patients with COVID-19. A predictive CAPRL score was proposed integrating independent risk factors. The 30-day mortality were 0% (0 of 156), 1.8% (8 of 434), 12.9% (26 of 201), 43.0% (55 of 128), and 76.7% (23 of 30) for patients with 0, 1, 2, 3, ≥4 points, respectively. Conclusions: We designed an easy-to-use clinically predictive tool for assessing 30-day mortality risk of COVID-19. It can accurately stratify hospitalized patients with COVID-19 into relevant risk categories and could provide guidance to make further clinical decisions.

BACKGROUND: Optimal management of persistent air leaks (PALs) in patients with secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of endobronchial autologous blood plus thrombin patch (ABP) and bronchial occlusion using silicone spigots (BOS) in patients with SSP accompanied by alveolar-pleural fistula (APF) and PALs. METHODS: This prospective multicentre randomized controlled trial compared chest tube-attached water-seal drainage (CTD), ABP, and BOS that were performed between February 2015 and June 2017 in one of six tertiary care hospitals in China. Patients diagnosed with APF experiencing PALs (despite 7 days of CTD) and inoperable patients were included. Outcome measures included success rate of pneumothorax resolution at the end of the observation period (further 14 days), duration of air leak stop, lung expansion, hospital stay, and complications. RESULTS: In total, 150 subjects were analysed in three groups (CTD, ABP, BOS) of 50 each. At 14 days, 60, 82, and 84% of CTD, ABP, and BOS subjects, respectively, experienced full resolution of pneumothorax (p = 0.008). All duration outcome measures were significantly better in the ABP and BOS groups than in the CTD group (p < 0.016 for all). The incidence of adverse events, including chest pain, cough, and fever, was not significantly different. All subjects in the ABP and BOS groups experienced temporary haemoptysis. Spigot displacement occurred in 8% of BOS subjects. CONCLUSION: ABP and BOS resulted in clinically meaningful outcomes, including higher success rate, duration of air leak stop, lung expansion, and hospital stay, with an acceptable safety profile.

The soil permeability and underground water level greatly affect the performance of low-impact development (LID) practices. Shanghai is located in the area of estuary and is characterized by its high groundwater level and low soil infiltration rate. The LID practices in Fuxing Island Park, Shanghai, including a bioretention cell, swales, a permeable pavement, and a combined LID practices were studied in the present paper. The performance of LID practices during the period of eight rainfall events was evaluated in terms of hydrology and water quality. Due to the detention of the LID practices, a significant delay between the peak rainfall and the peak surface runoff was observed. On-site tests show it is suitable for the applicability of LID in a rainy city with low soil infiltration rate and high groundwater level. Moreover, the Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) was also used to compare the hydrologic effects before and after these four LID practices application in the park. Results indicated the LID practices could effectively reduce the runoff volume and the peak flow in the park. Furthermore, the runoff water quality evaluation showed the pollutants were effectively removed by these four LID practices due to both runoff treatment and flow volume reduction. The bioretention system proved to be effective as a result of its larger facility area while the swales had the obvious reduction volume both per facility area and per catchment area.

The mechanisms involved in virus-induced severe hepatitis have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the role of gamma delta T cell receptors (γδ) T cells in the pathogenesis of fulminant viral hepatitis (FVH) induced by murine hepatitis virus strain 3 (MHV-3). The model of FVH was established by intraperitoneal injection of MHV-3 into Balb/cJ mice. The survival days of mice, and the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were examined. The proportions of γδ T cells in blood, spleen and liver, and cytokines secreted by hepatic γδ T cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. The function of hepatic γδ T cells was examined by cytotoxicity assay. Balb/cJ mice died in 3 to 6 days post MHV-3 infection, with severe hepatic necrosis and significant augmentation of serum ALT and AST levels. The proportions of γδ T cells in blood, spleen and liver were significantly increased post MHV-3 infection, while those of the early activating molecule CD69-expressing γδ T cells and productions of cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) increased remarkably in the liver. These highly activated liver γδ T cells were cytotoxic to MHV-3-infected hepatocytes in vitro and this effect of liver γδ T cells against hepatocytes might involve the TNF-α and IFN-γ pathway. These results demonstrated that γδ T cells might contribute to the pathogenesis of MHV-3-induced FVH through the effector cytokines TNF-α and IFN-γ.

While point source pollutions have gradually been controlled in recent years, the non-point source pollution problem has become increasingly prominent. The receiving waters are frequently polluted by the initial stormwater from the separate stormwater system and the wastewater from sewage pipes through stormwater pipes. Consequently, calculating the intercepted runoff depth has become a problem that must be resolved immediately for initial stormwater pollution management. The accurate calculation of intercepted runoff depth provides a solid foundation for selecting the appropriate size of intercepting facilities in drainage and interception projects. This study establishes a separate stormwater system for the Yishan Building watershed of Fuzhou City using the InfoWorks Integrated Catchment Management (InfoWorks ICM), which can predict the stormwater flow velocity and the flow of discharge outlet after each rainfall. The intercepted runoff depth is calculated from the stormwater quality and environmental capacity of the receiving waters. The average intercepted runoff depth from six rainfall events is calculated as 4.1 mm based on stormwater quality. The average intercepted runoff depth from six rainfall events is calculated as 4.4 mm based on the environmental capacity of the receiving waters. The intercepted runoff depth differs when calculated from various aspects. The selection of the intercepted runoff depth depends on the goal of water quality control, the self-purification capacity of the water bodies, and other factors of the region.

Ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury is a leading cause of acute kidney injury with high morbidity and mortality due to limited therapy. NMDA receptor inhibitor (DAP5) and resveratrol (Res) could ameliorate kidney I/R injury, but their use is limited by low aqueous solubility and poor stability. Here, we examined the potential protective effects of Res-DAP5 nanoparticles (NP) against renal I/R injury. Mice were subjected to renal ischemia for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 24 h. The results showed that Res-DAP5-NP could decreased serum creatinine (Cr) and urea nitrogen (BUN), alleviated tubular damage and oxidative stress. In addition, Res-DAP5-NP suppressed cell apoptosis, promoted the expression of p-DAPK, and inhibited the expression of p-CaMK and p-AKT. Furthermore, Res-DAP5-NP decreased the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and p-IκBα induced by renal I/R injury. In addition, Res-DAP5-NP also attenuated renal I/R injury in vivo, as manifested by increase in cell viability, SOD level, and the expression of p-DAPK, decreases in intracellular Ca2+ concentration and the expression of p-CaMK. Taken together, our findings indicates that Res-DAP5-NP could effectively protect renal I/R injury by inhibiting apoptosis and inflammation responses, possibly through AKT/NMDA/CaMK/DAPK and NF-κB pathways.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of genetic variants with characteristic symptoms of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: A matched case-control study was performed to investigate the association between common variants in four genes (CDKAL1, GLIS3, GRK5, and TCF7L2) and symptoms of T2DM. Symptoms were examined with questionnaire for 710 subjects. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cell by salting-out procedure. Genotyping was carried out by direct sequencing of the unpurified polymerase chain reaction products. RESULT: Most of the T2DM patients pressented characteristic symptoms, such as feeling weak in limbs (P =0.0057), hand tremor (P =0.0208), bradymasesis (P =0.0234), and polyuria (P =0.0051). Some of the T2DM patients shared characteristic symptoms, such as desire for cold drinks (P =0.0304), polyphagia (P =0.0051), and furred tongue (P =0.028). The impaired glucose regulation (IGR) cases took only one characteristic symptom of frequent micturition (P =0.0422). GLIS3 rs7034200 and GRK5 rs10886471 were significantly associated with increased T2DM risk (GLIS3 rs7034200 under dominant model: P=0.0307; GRK5 rs10886471 under recessive model: P=0.0092). However, only the rs10886471 polymorphism in GRK5 showed a significant effect on both differentiated symptoms and T2DM risk. The C-allele was involved in both dampness-heat encumbering Pi (Spleen) syndrome (P =0.047) and qi-yin deficiency syndrome (P =0.002) via increased GRK5 expression. CONCLUSIONS: Both T2DM and IGR exhibited its corresponding characteristic symptoms. The variants of GRK5 were involved with both qi-yin deficiency syndrome and dampness-heat encumbering Pi syndrome.

This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the event mean concentration (EMC) and first flush effect (FFE) during typical rainfall events in outfalls from different drainage systems and functional areas. Stormwater outfall quality data were collected from five outfalls throughout Fuzhou City (China) during 2011-2012. Samples were analyzed for water quality parameters, such as COD, NH3-N, TP, and SS. Analysis of values indicated that the order of the event mean concentrations (EMCs) in outfalls was intercepting combined system > direct emission combined system > separated system. Most of the rainfall events showed the FFE in all outfalls. The order of strength of the FFE was residential area of direct emission combined system > commercial area of separated system > residential area of intercepting combined system > office area of separated system > residential area of separated system. Results will serve as guide in managing water quality to reduce pollution from drainage systems.

In recent years, due to global climate change and rapid urbanization, extreme weather events occur to the city at an increasing frequency. Waterlogging is common because of heavy rains. In this case, the urban drainage system can no longer meet the original design requirements, resulting in traffic jams and even paralysis and post a threat to urban safety. Therefore, it provides a necessary foundation for urban drainage planning and design to accurately assess the capacity of the drainage system and correctly simulate the transport effect of drainage network and the carrying capacity of drainage facilities. This study adopts InfoWorks Integrated Catchment Management (ICM) to present the two combined sewer drainage systems in Yangpu District, Shanghai (China). The model can assist the design of the drainage system. Model calibration is performed based on the historical rainfall events. The calibrated model is used for the assessment of the outlet drainage and pipe loads for the storm scenario currently existing or possibly occurring in the future. The study found that the simulation and analysis results of the drainage system model were reliable. They could fully reflect the service performance of the drainage system in the study area and provide decision-making support for regional flood control and transformation of pipeline network.
